This original Canadian musical will enthrall audiences of all ages with its stunning high-definition depictions of Tom Thomson and Group of 7 artworks from the Art Gallery of Ontario, unforgettable characters, and rousing folk music score by the Shipyard Kitchen Party band.

National Police Dog Competition

On Saturday, September 9 at the Sadlon Arena in Barrie, attend the National Police Dog Competition with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and the Barrie Police Service. Police canine teams from around Canada will showcase their talents at this free event in competitions like quickest dog, agility, and obedience.

 

There will be vendors and family-friendly activities, with showtimes starting at 9am and 1pm. As your favorite teams demonstrate their talents, support them! Please be aware that for the protection of family pets, we ask that they remain at home.

Concert: Quartet Malamatina (England, Scotland, USA, Canada)

During their fall tour of Ontario, INFINITE WAVE quintet Malamatina stops in Barrie. Known for their “immensely colourful, lyrical and expressive playing,” Quartet Malamatina first came together around Leo Brouwer’s “Cuban Landscape with Rain” for a performance with film at the 2021 UN Climate Conference. The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. Admission is by donation, which can be made online or at the door (cash only).

 

Tim Beattie (Canada), Finlay Hay (Scotland), Ross Morris (England), and Lenny Ranallo (United States) make up the quartet Malamatina. Through a wide range of commissioning, arranging, multidisciplinary cooperation, and community involvement activities, they are advancing the historically significant, culturally diverse traditions of guitar music. Recent audiences of Quartet Malamatina’s performances include BBC Radio Scotland, The Worshipful Company of Musicians, Beacon Arts Center, and Carlisle Cathedral. Thanks to the kind assistance of Creative Scotland and the PRS Foundation, Malamatina presented world premiere performances of newly-commissioned pieces by Marco Galvani and Erin Thomson amid these performances.

 

The English National Opera conductor-composer Martyn Brabbins collaborated with the Quartet on a performance of his composition, Sometimes You Can Hear the Birds Sing, which was performed for the first time since 1984. Among the highlights of the Quartet’s season include residencies at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Yellow Barn (VT), and performances across Canada and the UK.

The Last Waltz – A Musical Celebration of the Band Live at Georgian Theatre

The Last Waltz – A Musical Celebration of The BAND – Live honors the songs and musical compositions of the renowned Canadian band.

 

One of Ontario’s most talked-about acts debuts at the Georgian Theatre in Barrie due to popular demand. The Regent Theatre will host this all-star Canadian ensemble of Grammy-winning blues and roots artists on January 21, 2023, under the direction of producer and musical director Lance Anderson.

 

They are commemorating THE BAND’s incredible contribution to our common Canadian musical heritage as well as the 47th anniversary of their final performance in 1976. At the Mariposa Folk Festival in 2017, the Beaches Jazz Festival in 2017, the Kitchener Blues Festival in 2017, the Ottawa City Folk Festival in 2016, the CNE Bandshell in 2015 (Toronto), and the Norfolk County Fair in 2016 (Simcoe), this performance has wowed crowds. Theatricals in Ottawa, Peterborough, Ajax, London, Orillia, Cobourg, Collingwood, and other cities have all sold out showings of the film. They successfully finished a tour of Western Canada in 2016.

 

This all-star lineup includes special guests, nine-piece band led by Maple Blues 2014 “Keyboardist of the Year” Lance Anderson, and godson of Levon Helm Jerome Levon Avis on drums and vocals. The mood of The Band’s final performance, which was captured in Martin Scorcese’s critically acclaimed concert movie The Last Waltz, will be re-created throughout the performance.

All Canadians observe the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to remember the history and consequences of the residential school system. It’s a day to celebrate the tenacity, dignity, and strength of survivors, including those who span generations, and to pay tribute to the kids who were abducted as well.

You are invited to go on a voyage of self-reflection with Sainte-Marie Among the Hurons, where you will listen to Indigenous speakers and cultural experts, learn from them, and form connections with them in an effort to raise awareness of the way to truth and reconciliation. You can connect online for free virtual learning or go to the historic place for a day of remembrance.
